‘Rap World’ Movie Review

Review by Rob Hinkal

Conner O'Malley and Danny Scharar's RAP WORLD Limited Engagement - American Cinematheque

Rap World is a weird one but a fun one. Clocking in at less than an hour, it delivers Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania-based insanity in the form of a fake documentary in which three men try to make a rap album in one night. What I will say is that they nailed the late 2000’s home video aesthetic.

The hilariously awkward text and (now) retro editing style is the source of a large amount of the humor in the film but also add so much to the vibe and aesthetic. This thing feels like a time capsule in spots with its use of cultural touchstones and period-appropriate music. Being a Pennsylvania native myself, it nails the tone of the long winter nights when you’re hanging out with your buds and having an unbelievable amount of fun doing absolutely nothing.

With laugh-out-loud moments and an undeniable passion held by all parties involved, Rap World is a fun trip down farcical memory lane.
