Twisters is NOT in the Suck Zone

Review by Rob Hinkal

Look… do you like tornadoes? Yeah? Okay. Do you like Glen Powell? Warming up to him? Okay, well then odds are that you are going to have a good time with Twisters.

From the director of the 2020 non-stop thrill ride, Minari, this new installment in the Twister franchise follows a cast of characters chasing storms across the American Midwest. I could get into the plot here, but let’s be honest, you’re not going to watch Twisters for the character development. You’re going because you want to see the real star of the show. MOTHER NATURE. And man oh man she does not disappoint. I’m not going to get into details here, but let’s just say that she gets pretty damn freaky in this one. There’s a scene involving a tornado swallowing up an explosion and it has got to be one of the coolest things I have seen in a movie theater since the poster for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance dropped way back in Obama’s first term.

We get all kinds of cyclones in this one. Big ones, small ones, cool ones, scary ones… This movie has them all! And with a talented leading cast including the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen (every boyfriend’s worst nightmare) Powell, and Anthony Ramos, there’s some life in what is, at times, an admittedly thin storyline. Even the new Superman, David Corenswet, lends his talents as a hunky storm chaser with a kick-ass pair of sunglasses.

Twisters may not top its predecessor, but when it is focused solely on its titular showstoppers, it is an oftentimes thrilling and impressive summer blockbuster. By the end, I couldn’t tell if I was sitting under the AC vent or if the tornadoes were just that powerful!
